Why we are building Memory Reel

posted 2:45pm 03/24/2010

Memory Reel was born out of our founders’ personal need to manage the narrative of their life stories in a fast moving world. A world where digital media, the Internet and mobile platforms are fundamentally changing the way we record our experiences and share our lives with friends and family.

At Memory Reel, we believe that life’s memories need to be preserved for the future. Even 10 years ago, most of our memories ended up in photo albums, shoe boxes or personal journals – so with a little bit of searching you could find that photo of grandma holding her grandson for the first time, or to just reminisce about all the family’s fun activities from the past year.

Today, the problem is one of abundance. The average person has 1800 digital photos on their computer. Additionally, most of us live our lives (at least partially) online – using multiple social networks, online tools, and mobile services to post relevant content from our lives – where we’ve been on vacation, the incredible rock concert we’re at, the story of our engagement, our favorite sushi place, a friend’s wedding, the birth of our children, an interesting article we just read, etc. etc. etc.

The question is, where does all this go once it disappears into the ether?  Sure you’ve informed your friends, but why can’t you aggregate all this information that you put out there every day into an ongoing story that describes your compelling life experiences? An interactive journal or scrapbook of sorts that brings together your life in a cohesive way – Something that disparate messages to multiple social networks, photo sharing websites and micro-blogs just cannot.

That’s exactly what Memory Reel has set out to do. We believe that the next wave of value creation for consumers will be the ability to create order out of their exponentially increasing digital presence. Memory Reel helps our users create and manage a lifetime of unforgettable memories. Its a whole new way to combine text, photos, audio and video to capture, create, share and preserve the “experience” of your life. Our visualization tools help you explore, filter and package your memories in contextually relevant ways that you can either share digitally on your favorite social network, or use to create a record for personal use.
